Anuttarayoga Extraordinary Preliminaries
Preparation is the secret to success. And the profound Buddhist Mantrayana path is no exception. That’s why lamas emphasize one practice so much: ngondro, the extraordinary preliminaries.
This retreat qualifies as the third year of The Complete Path. You will receive the major empowerment of Buddha Hevajra, the transmission of the ngondro practice and an explanation on how to develop it in retreat or as a daily practice.
Ngondro are the preliminary practices of Mantrayana Buddhism and a central element of all Tibetan schools. With them, we lay the essential foundation for understanding and practicing Buddhism’s most powerful teachings: Anuttarayoga Tantra.
The Extraordinary Ngondro practices allow us to accumulate merit, purify our obscurations and be prepared to receive the blessing on the Mantrayana path. – HH 41st Sakya Trizin
The ngondro practices consist of six meditations. Doing them will transform your body, speech and mind into suitable vessels so that you can take full advantage of the Mantrayana teachings. Each of the meditations fulfills a particular goal:
- Taking Refuge: settles in the spiritual path
- Generating Bodhicitta: perfects aspiration
- Prostrations: reduce pride
- Vajrasattva: purifies negative karma
- Mandala Offering: accumulates merit
- Guru Yoga: prepares you to receive blessings
Each meditation is practiced 100,000 times. Such a number is not an obstacle to the practice, but one of its advantages: the difficulty in doing so allows you to work with the mind’s resistance, limitations and weaknesses. At the same time, it creates the necessary inner space for the transformation and transcendence that characterize Mantrayana.
“On the spiritual path, mastering the preliminaries is equivalent to winning the war. The rest of practices, no matter how allegedly advanced or sophisticated, are only technical battles.” (Lama Rinchen Gyaltsen)
